More information on the programming / acronyms:
Job Essentials Training/JET: As Henry Street’s primary walk-in employment program, JET provides low-income jobseekers with individualized career readiness preparation, group workshops, connections to education/occupational training, and job placement/retention support, as well as a range of wraparound services (e.g. financial counseling, mental health services, public benefits enrollment). Over the past year, JET enrolled 371 participants, approximately 30% of whom are under the age of 24. As our diverse clients often lack the professional connections, work history, core skills, education, and confidence to succeed in NYC’s competitive job market, JET ensures that all participants have access to the holistic services they need to obtain sustainable jobs, maintain economic independence, and build long-term stability for themselves and their families.
On-Ramps to Opportunity/ORO: Henry Street’s On Ramps to Opportunity (ORO) program, which began in late 2021 to reach the “pandemic generation”—young people ages 18 to 24 who were disconnected from school and employment, and hard to reach through traditional workforce programs. ORO provides a range of services to young people, starting by identifying their educational needs and workforce dreams. For some, the immediate need is for help drafting resumes and cover letters, and then nailing their interviews. For others, it’s enrolling in a GED program, applying to college, exploring professional certification programs, and/or getting mental health support and referrals to other services.
Stacks+ Joules: Henry Street offers an innovative Building Automated Systems (BAS) training program that targets disconnected youth aged 18-24 for a high-impact course that prepares students for high quality jobs in the energy sector. Launched in 2021 in partnership with Stacks+Joules, our signature BAS program prepares underrepresented young adult jobseekers for entry into the rapidly growing green energy sector. The program features several embedded industry certifications, as well as an innovative Energy Audit Internship component, where select interns are guided in conducting hands-on assessments of Henry Street’s LES-based buildings for energy efficiency improvements with the hands-on guidance of content experts from Buro Happold and Autodesk. Additionally, in fall 2024 Henry Street was excited to secure a new, multi-year DYCD Train & Earn contract that will allow us to further institutionalize and enhance our BAS program in the coming years–including expanding the number of youth served from 40 to 60 per year, integrating a paid internship component for all trainees, and bolstering targeted staff support with a designated social worker and job developer for the program.
